Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Admissions

Please call or email. YIS currently has many vacancies in pre-school through Grade 3 due to growth and expansion. We will also enroll additional Grade 4 students for the 2016-2017 school year. For Grades 5-11, vacancies are rarer. All Grade 12 students must be transfers from accredited, American curriculum schools so that they may fulfill the graduation requirements for an American high school diploma on time.

  • A registration fee holds your child’s place in their grade level
  • A capital levy fee supports building maintenance, security, and expansion
  • Tuition supports all costs associated with academic and extracurricular learning for your child
  • Lunch and uniforms are nominal fees that are paid separately

By policy, tuition must be paid in advance in order for a child to be admitted to school. Tuition fees and procedures for payment are available in the office.

  • The student body at YIS grows more diverse every year. About 80% of our students are Myanmar nationals and about 20% of our students are international passport holders.
  • English is the only language spoken in classes and all courses are taught in English.
  • Languages spoken at home include Burmese, Korean, Chinese, Chinese (Mandarin), English, Danish, French, Hindi, Japanese, and Thai.
  • All teachers are certified in the United States or the country of origin of each teacher
  • All teachers, besides the wonderful Myanmar studies department, are native English speakers from the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, or South Africa
  • The Myanmar studies teachers run the best established Myanmar langauge and studies department at any international school in Myanmar
  • All elementary school classes have a classroom assistant who is locally qualified
  • Most teachers and administrators have between 5-20 years of experience
  • Many teachers have earned master’s degrees and more are currently working toward higher degrees
  • By policy, YIS maintains class limits of no more than 22 students for each homeroom section of each grade level.
  • There are currently three sections of each grade in Kindergarten through Grade 3.
  • There will be a third section of Grade 4 for the 2016-2017 school year.
  • There are two sections each of Grade 5 through Grade 12.

All students take music, art, performing arts, physical education, health (Secondary), character and life-skills development (Elementary), IT, Myanmar studies, and foreign language (Spanish or Mandarin, High School).

  • All students are considered based on their applications and screening results. You should apply!
  • The mission of YIS is to foster the development of the whole child who is a participating global citizen and a lifelong learner. If these are the values you seek for your child’s education, you should apply!

Small class sizes help us maintain the high quality of education at YIS. We do not exceed capacity. We will work with your family to try to admit all children as vacancies become available, provided that they have all screened at acceptable levels for their grade levels.

YIS reserves the right to request a copy of student records before a child is allowed to enroll at the school. All applicants will be asked for at least two years of academic records as well as any standardized test results or psychoeducational evaluations. Records are essential at the high school level due to the evaluation of credits to meet the YIS graduation requirements. Records must be in English or with official translations.

To fulfill the YIS graduation requirements, students from non-American accredited schools will need to attend YIS for a minimum of two consecutive years. If a student is coming from another accredited American school, he/she may enter as a senior.

  • In grades 9-12 students are required to take 26 credits, which must include the following:
  • English: 4 credits
  • Art/Performing Arts: 1 credit
  • Math: 3 credits
  • Foreign Language: 2 credits
  • Science: 3 credits
  • Technology: 1 credit
  • Social Studies: 3 credits
  • Career/College Prep: .5 credits
  • PE: 1.5 credits
  • Electives: 6-8 credits

100% of our seniors are offered admission to international colleges or universities. Most choose to study in the United States.

  • Students who are departing should hand carry their current records to their next school. These records will only be given to the parent of the child.
  • Please notify the elementary or secondary office if your child will not continue at YIS next semester. YIS will arrange their withdrawal and the Admission Office will place a new student in the vacancy.
